How Sleep Strengthens Memory

PARAGRAPH 1

Learning does not end when a study session stops. Newly acquired information is initially fragile, and the brain must stabilise it through a process known as memory consolidation. During sleep, patterns of neural activity associated with recent experience are reactivated, which may strengthen the connections needed for later recall.

KEY IDEA

Language Notes 语言点

be associated with与……相关

The pattern is associated with recent experience.

a process known as一个被称为……的过程

This is a process known as consolidation.

PARAGRAPH 2

The effect is not identical for every kind of memory. Some sleep stages appear to support factual knowledge, while others are linked more closely to motor skills or emotional memories. Researchers therefore avoid claiming that one extra hour of sleep produces a fixed improvement. The evidence instead suggests that adequate, regular sleep creates conditions in which several memory systems can function effectively.

KEY IDEA

Language Notes 语言点

be linked to与……有联系

Deep sleep is linked to memory processing.

avoid claiming that避免断言……
