The Skill of Asking Better Questions
A question shapes the answer that follows. If you ask, ‘Did the meeting go well?’, the other person may simply say yes. If you ask, ‘Which part of the meeting was most useful?’, you invite a more specific response. Good questions do not need to sound clever. They need to make the purpose of the conversation clearer.
Language Notes 语言点
The wording of a survey can shape the answer.
An open question invites a fuller response.
Useful follow-up questions often begin with what, how, or why. However, why can sometimes sound critical, especially when a mistake has happened. Asking ‘What led to this decision?’ is often softer than asking ‘Why did you do that?’ After listening, summarise what you heard and check your understanding. A good question is only valuable when you pay attention to the answer.
